Athens is a city where antiquity and modernity share the same pavement, and where the rhythm of life seems permanently set to aperitivo hour.
Spend 24 hours here and you quickly realize that Greece’s capital is not just living in the shadow of the Acropolis; it’s shaking cocktails beneath it.
The modern Athens bar scene is nothing short of world-class. Within a few square miles, you find a concentration of creativity that rivals London, New York, Paris, and Singapore, yet it retains something distinctly Athenian: warm hospitality, a sense of theater, and an instinctive understanding of flavor.
The city’s culinary confidence spills effortlessly into its drinks culture, where bartenders treat ingredients with the same reverence as chefs. Wild herbs, citrus oils, olive brine, honey, and spice all find their way into the shaker, creating cocktails that feel both inventive and deeply rooted in place.
Of course, Athenian bartenders are not working with a blank canvas – Greece’s spirit heritage provides rich inspiration. Mastiha, with its resinous, pine-kissed freshness, harvested from the island of Chios, lends a uniquely Mediterranean character to countless drinks. Metaxa, that enigmatic blend of brandy from the island of Samos, offers warmth, depth, and versatility. It’s just as comfortable in a stirred-down nightcap as it is in a bright, aromatic highball. Think of it as the holiday romance you’ll smuggle home in your suitcase, the affair continuing long after your suntan has faded.
Industry events like Athens Bar Week (November 1-5, 2026) have helped to crystallize this momentum, transforming the city into a magnet for the global bar community. Each year, some of the world’s most respected bartenders descend on the Greek capital to take over top venues, further sharpening Athens’ reputation as one of the planet’s most exciting drinking destinations.
And the best way to understand it all? Give the city at least 24 hours, a comfortable pair of shoes, and a healthy thirst.
The Clumsies
A happy accident? Or something so wonderfully calculated that its genius hits you squarely after your second drink. Either way, The Clumsies has truly cemented Athens’ place on the world bartending stage, thanks to the ingenuity and confidence of its founders, Vasilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis.
The bar is lively, enjoyment bouncing merrily off the rustic stone walls, high ceilings, and parquet-paneled interior.
But that traditional decor deftly masks the precision and creativity of its menu: the Tomato Solaris (from the recent Species Unlimited concept) brings together Johnnie Walker Black Label with Kariki cheese and sun-dried tomato; Café Flamma infuses Metaxa 12 Stars with burnt tomatoes, cardamom and cold brew coffee; and perennial favorite, the Aegean Negroni, is an electric-blue cocktail of fennel seeds, white vermouth, gin and Italicus. It’s a heady, completely inviting, palate-twisting experience.

Avra, Four Seasons Astir Palace
A destination to either start or end your night, depending on where you’re staying. Astir Palace, on the Vouliagmeni coast, lies about 20 minutes’ drive outside of downtown by cab, but as experiences go, it’s a must-see.
The views as the sun dips into the Saronic Gulf are spectacular – and so is the drinking experience to elegantly wash it all down. The newly launched menu at the beautifully open-plan Avra bar is the brainchild of Petros Patitis and Christos Kalogeropoulos: a fine balance of reimagined classics with an actual scratch-and-sniff menu celebrating the four distinct seasons.
Spring brings Grass, a bright, fragrant, and herbaceous mix of Chopin wheat vodka, cucumber distillate, lemongrass extraction and fresh grass sugar syrup. Summer is all about Berry: mastiha, milk powder ice cream, cold-pressed red fruit and Greek gin combine for a wonderfully creamy, light experience.
Fall highlights Greece’s peppermint season, twisting both the Mojito and Rum & Coke into something truly mesmerizing, while Winter’s Charcoal combines Calle 23 tequila, cold-pressed grapefruit and a burnt rosewood extraction. As menus go, the sheer level of invention here is very special indeed.
Baba au Rhum
Despite the obvious rum – or rhum – connection, this legendary Athens nightspot taps into the word “spirit” in a distinctly convivial, attitudinal way. As a founding father of the city’s bar scene, B.A.R has been slinging outlandish tiki-inspired creations since 2009, and its global reputation has seen it grace the hallowed World’s 50 Best Bars list for 11 consecutive years.
Zombies bursting with five different aged rums and Falernum; Devil’s Milk with chili, chocolate bitters and nutmeg; a Buccaneer’s Negroni, fragrant with vetiver and tonka bean – the list of utterly captivating classics is enough to draw a wide smile from even the most hardened drinks connoisseur.
And all this before venturing onto the Experimentals list, overflowing with creativity yet carrying a reassuring “we’ve got this” confidence. As good as it gets in Athens – and anywhere else, for that matter.

A For Athens
Athens is one of those cities where history is around every corner, with its centerpiece being the mighty Acropolis. Building regulations have quite rightly dictated that nothing gets in the way of its incredible historical splendor, and its influence can be felt in every street. To truly appreciate the majesty, though, venture up to the rooftop bar at the A for Athens hotel for perhaps the most memorable eye-level moment of your trip.
The bar itself is another example of how Athens embraces simplicity and turns it into something understated yet perfect. Martinis are the specialty – seek out the Stormy Martini with Gin Mare, fino sherry, Talisker single malt and seaweed – but you’ll find a solid list of mythologically inspired drinks to heighten your sense of historical wonder: from Sirens, a smoky mezcal take on the Martinez, to Circe’s Potion, a twist on a milk punch with cereal milk, pale ale, Dewar’s 12 Year Old, a liberal drizzle of Vin Santo and Metaxa.
The 7 Jokers
Small enough to be considered a dive bar, but with enough class to elevate itself to arguably Athens’ most coveted late-night hangout. The 7 Jokers recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, and you get the impression that very little has changed over those two eventful decades.
Simple, elegant furniture and a timeless Victorian decor lure you into thinking quiet, contemplative Martinis are the specialty – but you’d be wrong. Alongside the incredibly well-made classics (the Daiquiris, particularly), you’ll find a frequently updated list of house specials, like the He Was Worthy: Greek tsipouro, pineapple juice, bitters, and red chili, topped with lemonade. Later on, it becomes a raw, crowded, rock ‘n’ roll-fueled experience. A perfect slice of Athens after dark.
