White Peak, Caduro X

Derbyshire-based White Peak Distillery has added to its Wireworks range of single malts with this limited-edition expression intended to celebrate the distillery's tenth anniversary. To reflect the small craft distillery's founding in 2016, it is offering Caduro X as a blend inspired by the first of its core range, 2023's Caduro. This whisky is aged in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels with STR ( shaved, toasted, and re-charred ) ex-red wine casks, resulting in a dram that stays true to the distillery's flavor-forward principles.
Nose
Green apple skin, lemon zest, campfire smoke
Palate
Lemon zest, toffee, light smoke
Finish
Toasted oak, light smoke, dried fruit
Caduro X demonstrates why many critics – including myself – believe that Wireworks is arguably the most consistent and charismatic English single malt on the market. The whisky is surprisingly tropical on first nosing: ripe mango notes lead into a broad orchard fruit mixture of peach, sliced green apple, and plums, before a pronounced smoke of bonfire embers develops. It's well balanced and wholesome, with some cereal notes and a touch of milk chocolate emerging. The palate is rich and very drinkable with a light dusting of smokiness, a rich toffee/caramel note, and some bright citrus lemon zest. Dig a little deeper, and you'll find ripe plums, pears, and more of the green apple from the nose. Finally, there's a nice lingering finish, with notes of aged oak spice, a touch of vanilla, and a continuation of the gentle smoke from the palate. Another hugely successful release from Wireworks.
