Atanasio Añejo is a small-batch, additive-free tequila from René Carranzo. This añejo tequila spent 13 months ageing in ex-bourbon American white oak barrels, striking a fine line between the pure agave and the influence of the wood. It is produced in the highlands of San Pedro de los Landeros in Jalisco, Mexico.

Nose

Butter, cinnamon, toasted oak

Palate

Pineapple, peach, oily texture

Finish

Oak spice, caramelized sugars, warming

The nose on this añejo brings with it some serious character – a butteriness carries the headier spice notes like cinnamon and nutmeg, while the cask is clearly coming through. On the palate, fruit starts to come through like cooked pineapple and charred peach. An oiliness there is beautifully mouthcoating and brings those fruit notes some roundness. The finish is warming, and a lovely caramelized sweetness from the agave rounds it off nicely. A really good expression of an anejo that still retains that all-important character.
