Arquitecto, Tequila Blanco

The child of architect and distiller Enrique Fonesca, the aptly named Arquitecto bottles this blanco tequila produced at the Tequileña distillery in Tequila, Jalisco. Foregrounding the Blue Weber Agave in this clear, unaged spirit, Arquitecto utilizes sustainable, eco-friendly practices such as only using mature agave to protect plant numbers and the land itself.
Nose
Grapefruit, top soil, savory notes
Palate
Oily texture, coastal salinity, bell pepper
Finish
Menthol, white pepper, chalk
The nose is exceptionally earthy, and there are some funky cheese notes alongside grapefruit and damp soil. There is also a combination of vegetal and herbal notes, from coriander and mint to clay and petrichor. On the palate, an oily texture is complemented by a refreshing citrus that starts to shine through, and some jalapeno heat is followed up by a whisper of smoke and the specific taste of pencil shavings. The finish is medium-long, and there is a real cleansing menthol effect right at the end. This would work brilliantly in a Cantarito cocktail, and equally well as a sipping tequila too.
