Oban, Prima & Ultima Fourth Release

The final remaining of Oban's 1996 casks, this bottling stood apart from the distillery’s more familiar profile, showing a firmer, drier structure. Matured in refill European oak, a rare choice for Oban, it emphasised maritime notes and brought a pronounced peppery spice to both aroma and palate. Released as Oban’s first appearance in the Prima & Ultima series, it reflected a period of strong confidence for the distillery, following a record three wins in the Manager’s Dram competition.
Nose
Sea spray, medicinal notes, candle wax, smoke
Palate
Bitter orange, salt, maritime notes, Oak spice
Finish
Oak spice, maritime
Maritime notes lead the nose with soft medicinal touches and a faint sweetness. Snuffed candle and distant smoke add an old school feel. The palate carries bitter orange and salinity with a hint of Campbeltown funk, while European oak gives structure. The finish is gently spiced and drying. A little water eases the edges and lets Oban’s natural sweetness reappear.
