Port Ellen’s production ended in 1983, leaving a fixed and steadily diminishing stock. This release was drawn from the final three American oak hogsheads filled in 1978, offering a rare glimpse into Port Ellen’s late-period character. The casks were filled and overseen by Iain MacArthur, who later filled the distillery’s final cask in 1983. The whisky shows a full, oily texture, opening with sweetness before shifting to coastal salinity, soft spice and lingering, aromatic smoke.

Nose

Oak tannins, ash, extinguished bonfire

Palate

Smoke, ash, orchard fruits

Finish

Spice, black pepper, maritime notes

On the nose it is dry and ashy, evoking an extinguished bonfire. The palate starts drying and smoky with pronounced ashiness until a drop of water softens the profile and reveals the signature Port Ellen sweetness beneath the smoke. The finish sees the spice return, lingering with peppery warmth and a touch of coastal salinity.
