Glenmorangie, 50 Years Old

Glenmorangie 50 Years Old was released in September 2026 as the oldest single malt Scotch whisky the distillery has ever bottled. It comes from a small parcel of high-quality liquids Dr. Bill Lumsden (head of whisky creation at Glenmorangie) earmarked when he became distillery manager in 1995. He took a portion from ex-bourbon barrels and ex-sherry casks, and married it in a pair of tightly cooped casks to see how far he could push Glenmorangie's light spirit. The result is a vibrant 50-year-old that maintains strength and distillery character.
Nose
Licorice, blood orange, strawberries
Palate
Toffee, spices, dark fruits
Finish
Mandarin orange, cacao powder, suede
The whisky opens with light soy, salted licorice, perfectly ripe, warm strawberries, and blood orange, followed by suede jacket, menthol reminiscent of Hawick Balls or Fisherman’s Friends. A hint of dusty smoke gives away the original floor malted barley. The palate is wonderfully creamy: Blue Bird toffee meets chili flakes, cumin, cardamom, and black pepper, with blackcurrant cordial bringing a darker fruitiness. Mandarin orange, cacao powder, and more suede linger on the finish. Dr. Bill Lumsden’s ambition to encourage oxidation alongside maturation feels beautifully realized here: deep, rich flavor without the oak bitterness that can turn old whisky into an endurance test. Fifty years old, yet still lithe, and a pleasure to drink.
