Aberfeldy, Exceptional Cask 24 Year Old

Aberfeldy's Exceptional Cask Series gathers single- and double-cask bottlings hand-picked by malt master Stephanie Macleod, and this is its latest edition. After more than two decades in ex-bourbon casks, the whisky was moved into white Port casks from Portugal's Douro Valley for its final stretch. The distillery, founded by the Dewar brothers in 1898 and the brand home of Dewar's blended Scotch, is known for a honeyed house style.
Nose
Melon, white grapes, green apple skins
Palate
Honey, orchard fruits, cedarwood
Finish
Oak spice, dried fruits
Aberfeldy is a sweet whisky, and white Port can be intensely sweet. The result? Intense sweetness. The nose is vibrant with fresh fruit: melon, white grapes, blossom honey, and green apple skins. There's plenty of honey, as you'd expect, but also a zingy sharpness that defies its age. The palate offers more honey and orchard fruit, though the unmistakable sign of age comes through towards the finish. It starts to dry ever so slightly, and the finish is dominated by oak — not to its detriment, I hasten to add.
