House of Hazelwood, The Silent Partner
House of Hazelwood's first-ever peated blend, The Silent Partner, showcases the house's blending expertise — here, peated malt is used almost as a seasoning. A sweet Lowland grain base is layered with Highland malts matured in American and European oak, with a whisper of smoke from a Highland distillery still using traditional peat-fired methods in the 1970s. This 47-year-old blend is a unique mixture of styles from the Charles Gordon Collection.
Nose
Pastry, heather, orchard fruit
Palate
Poached pair, almond brittle, gunpowder smoke
Finish
Stewed fruit, caramelized sugars, lingering smoke
The nose is rich and immediately transports you to a patisserie. Warm buttery pastry is lifted with some heady florality and aromas of the orchard, from the blossom and trees themselves through to fuzzy pear skin and waxy apples. The palate introduces a surprise of smoke which isn't evident on the nose, and builds alongside pear notes and some nuttiness. The finish sees the fruits becoming more concentrated and cooked, while the smoke continues to linger.
