Rare Series, Caol Ila 1983

The oldest Caol Ila that Diageo has ever bottled, this is a savory Islay dram aged in American oak before a short marriage in European oak. It was released as part of the Diageo Rare Series in 2026 as the sole representative for Islay within the inaugural bottlings. Bottled at a cask strength of 56.4% ABV and limited to 318 bottles, this is one of the oldest drams Islay has ever produced.
Nose
Barbecued smoke, charred oak, pineapple
Palate
Maritime notes, charred meat
Finish
Oak spice, sea salt
At this age, much of Caol Ila’s smoky signature is gone, at least on the nose. In its place, you get barbecued meat, charred oak, and hints of tropical fruit. The taste is sweet at first, before the phenols make their presence known. It turns salty, maritime, and spicy. But this wears its age and strength lightly. There’s an elegance to it that only time can deliver.
