Aberargie's first Scotch whisky release is true to its founding principles as a barley-to-bottle farm distillery. The 300-acre family farm grows all the barley used in distillation and places far greater emphasis on the influence of the land than many other distilleries dare to go. This release is proudly presented as non-chill-filtered and natural color, and is made with a mixture of Golden Promise and Laureate barley. Although a non-age-stated whisky, the release is said to be made with some of the distillery's oldest casks, which were filled in 2017.

Nose

Tarte Tatin, pastry, caramel

Palate

Baked apples, dried fruits, nutmeg

Finish

Oak spice, orchard fruit

A lovely, rich amber in colour, this whisky wears its first-fill bourbon and sherry casks proudly, with a pleasing viscosity in the glass that promises texture from the outset. The nose is delightfully autumnal, calling to mind apple tarte tatin, with clear notes of buttery pastry, sticky caramel, dried fruits, and a touch of chocolate, all finished with a light dusting of cloves. On the palate, that richness of cooked apple arrives immediately, matched by a mouth-coating weight and a big, bold warmth of spice, led by clove and nutmeg, before a puckering dryness grips the sides of the tongue. This is no shy whisky. The finish is medium-long, drawing out the spice and wood beautifully while never losing those warming pastry and orchard notes.
