The GlenAllachie, Sinteis Series 2014, French Oak & Oloroso

The GlenAllachie is renowned for big-flavored whiskies, with master distiller Billy Walker an advocate of heavily sherried whiskies. The Sinteis Series gives the maturation team room to experiment, and this expression delivers big flavors from a combined maturation in oloroso sherry casks and new French oak casks. As with all releases in the Sinteis Series, this 11-year-old expression is non-chill-filtered, natural-color, and bottled at cask strength. Expect big flavors held in delicate balance.
Nose
Toasted almonds, vanilla cream, pipe tobacco
Palate
Oak, Raspberries, lemon zest
Finish
Caramel, toasted oak
Punchy and fruit-filled, the nose opens with a bold, fresh sherry note leaping from the glass, followed by toasted almonds, creamy vanilla, pipe tobacco, freshly baked cherry pie with glazed pastry, patisserie cream, and fruit pastilles. With water, the fruitiness deepens into fresh raspberries, lemon balm, and a touch of dunnage warehouse mustiness, very much in a good way. The palate is hot but mouth-filling and full-flavored, with dry oak, raspberries, bittersweet vanilla pod, fresh pencil shavings, toasted brioche, and a kick of lemon zest. Water brings softer cream, dark caramel, and gentler toasted oak. The finish is slightly short, but bold, with lingering oak and fragrant citrus.
