Torabhaig, Sound of Sleat Batch Strength
The Sound of Sleat series by Torabhaig has been so well-received that the distillery decided to release a batch-strength version of Sound of Sleat, the fourth in the series. It's named for the narrow strip of water separating the Isle of Skye from the Scottish mainland, thus giving the island its own distinct personality. This expression is crafted from a blend of Concerto and Laureate malted barley, and peated to 78PPM+ to give it a distinctive smoky style. It's aged in a mixture of first-fill and refill American oak, including heavily toasted barrels shipped directly from the cooperage.

The nose on this is what I like to put in front of people who say they don't like peated whisky. Yes, there is smoke, but it is immediately matched with more maritime, umami notes, followed by orange stone fruits, orange, and a honeycomb sweetness right on the finish. The smoke comes through much more boldly on the palate and almost immediately, but matched with the salinity that was also on the nose, I'm getting grilled mushrooms and those more umami characteristics. This is followed by some sweetness and almost singed orange peel, as well as a welcome sweetness to balance things out. The texture is gloriously waxy, and there is a heat of pepper on the lips right on the end.
