This whisky from The Macallan is an age-stated vintage from 2007 and, rather unusually, uses Rioja red wine casks mixed with sherry-seasoned American and European oak. At an intimate launch event attended by The World of Fine Spirits, lead whisky maker Russell Grieg said red wine casks are extremely rare within the distillery’s aging stocks.

Nose

Red berries, vanilla pods, dried fruits

Palate

Coffee-flavored chocolate, icing sugar, dried cranberries, cherries, dates, figs

Finish

Dried fruits, dark chocolate, raw almonds, oak spice

The nose opens with luscious red berries layered over the classic Macallan signature of vanilla bean and dried fruits. On the palate, coffee-flavoured chocolate and powdered sugar give way to dried cranberries and a subtle dryness, while a touch of water softens the tannins and unlocks a deeper seam of dried fruit — cherries, dates and figs. The finish is long and considered, moving through dark chocolate and raw almonds before a lingering spice brings things to a quietly satisfying close.
