Fettercairn, Vanguard The Rare

This new release from Fettercairn hits all the right notes for The World of Fine Spirits. It’s limited to 99 bottles, it’s reasonably priced and it tastes great. The series is inspired by the distillery’s master whisky maker Gregg Glass’ synaesthesic tasting system, meaning he tastes in colors rather than flavors. As such, this whisky spent its final three years in a rare pink oak cask, which has given the whisky an intensely floral character. It’s perfect for Fettercairn’s tropical style.
Nose
Caramelized banana, pineapple, vanilla, strawberries, varnish, walnuts
Palate
Oak spice, oak tannins, dried strawberries, tart fruit
Finish

This one starts bright and tropical before giving way to varnish and walnut. The palate delivers spice and tannin with sharp strawberry notes cutting through. The finish is sweet, full of dried fruit and vanilla.
