Gordon & MacPhail’s Glenlivet 80 Year Old represented the pinnacle of patience and craft upon its release in 2021. Distilled in 1940 and drawn from Cask 340 after eight decades, it became the oldest single malt ever bottled. Architect Sir David Adjaye designed the decanter, a sculptural creation inspired by whisky’s bond with oak, housed within a handcrafted pavilion of sustainable wood. Only 250 were made, with the first auctioned to support Scotland’s rewilding efforts through the charity Trees for Life.

Nose

Sandalwood, faint peat smoke, floral notes

Palate

Citrus fruit, oak spice, orange oil, aniseed, figs

Finish

Menthol, oak spice

For its age, the whisky keeps a surprising burst of sweetness and fruit. The palate builds on that with woody spice and a gradual shift into richer notes. The finish lasts indefinitely with spearmint creeping in late.
