At the time of release, this Port Ellen 1980 was the oldest expression ever released by the distillery. While that record has long since been broken, it still stands as one of the most remarkable single malts to come off the island of Islay. The whisky comes from the two very last casks – a refill American oak and a refill European oak – from 1980, which spent their entire life aging on Islay. That's rare, as most casks are sent to age on the Scottish mainland. It's a true reflection of Port Ellen's potential.

Nose

Brine, seaweed, sea spray, smoke

Palate

Salt, gentle smoke, tropical fruits

Finish

Salt, peat smoke, tropical fruits

Initially tight at high ABV, the nose opens with water to reveal Port Ellen’s coastal brine, seaweed and maritime smoke. The palate is measured and drying, building with salt and calm smoke over time. Water deepens the complexity. The finish is persistent and quietly smoky with a saline edge.
