Benriach challenged Speyside convention with the release of The Forty, a rare 40-year-old peated single malt drawn from some of the distillery’s oldest stock. Selected by master blender Rachel Barrie, the whisky matured primarily in American oak, where time softened the peat and pushed fruit to the fore. The result is refined rather than smoky, with ripe orchard fruit, nutty depth and a restrained, peppery finish shaped by four decades of ageing.

Nose

Orange, plum, honey pomelo, dark chocolate berries, walnuts, cherry liqueur

Palate

Orchard fruits, morello cherry, nectarine, stewed red apple, white peach

Finish

Walnuts, kumquat

The nose is richly fruity with sweet orange, plum and honey pomelo, supported by dark chocolate berries, walnut and cherry liqueur. The palate follows with a lush mix of orchard fruits, silky morello cherry, nectarine, stewed red apple and white peach. It finishes on a smooth, velvety blend of walnut and kumquat that lingers with gentle sweetness.
