The Balvenie, Fifty, First Edition

The Balvenie launched The Fifty Collection with a 50 Year Old First Edition, marking the first major release overseen by new malt master Kelsey McKechnie. The series was conceived as a three-part collection, beginning with a single-cask whisky distilled in 1973 and matured in a refill European oak butt. Limited to 125 bottles, the whisky is bottled at cask strength and presents a fresh yet deeply mature Speyside profile shaped by five decades of careful ageing.
Nose
Dried fruit, candied fruit, poached pear, toasted nuts
Palate
Honey, vanilla, floral notes, ginger, citrus
Finish
Cedarwood, oak tannins, candied fruit
Dried and candied fruits lead the nose with toasted nuts and poached pear. Despite the age, the whisky feels brighter than expected, with honey, vanilla and floral notes on the palate. Candied ginger and citrus sharpen the edges. The finish turns more classical, showing cedar, dryness and a soft tannic pull while keeping the candied fruit alive.
