Ardbeg released The Abyss, a 34-year-old single malt inspired by the original Corryvreckan 2008 and aimed squarely at the fine and rare market. Limited to 400 bottles, the whisky was matured initially in ex-bourbon casks before extended ageing in heavily toasted French oak. Bottled at cask strength, it retains Ardbeg’s dense, peated character while showing deeper oak-driven complexity, marking one of the oldest and most experimental releases in the distillery’s history.

Nose

Ashy smoke, roasted lemon, treacle, toasted marshmallow

Palate

Ash, oak spice, pecans, walnuts, leather, dark chocolate

Finish

Peat smoke, oak spice, worn leather

Smoke, oak and fruit sit in good balance on the nose, with roasted lemon, treacle and toasted marshmallow pointing straight at Ardbeg’s character. The palate is oily and driven by oak spice and ashy barbecue notes, followed by pecans, walnuts, leather and dark chocolate. The finish stays firmly in smoky territory with the peat outlasting everything else.
