Mount Gay, Exceptionally Aged 25 Year Old
The older half of Mount Gay's Exceptionally Aged Collection (with the 15 Year Old), and the more finite of the two: a single-batch bottling drawn from what remains of the distillery's 1999 cask inventory. Jerry Edwards distilled it on a column still that year, Allen Smith carried it through maturation in ex-bourbon casks, and Trudiann Branker finalized the blend.
Nose
Almond, cherry, clove
Palate
Warming, cacao, candied orange
Finish
Dried fig, caramelized sugar, polished oak
There are some lovely qualities about this rum – most of which are on the nose. There is a battenberg-esque marzipan character with almond and cherry, which are warmed up with a waft of baking spices, specifically clove. The palate has a pleasant warmth with a hint of waxiness, while chewy candied orange and the edge of cacao work nicely together. The finish is a little flat, but there are some good dried-fruit highlights, including fig, and a residual sweetness, too. For something this age, this is perhaps not as complex or rich as it could be – but there are still some high notes to enjoy.
