Angostura is known primarily for producing its famous bitters, one of the most widely distributed spirit products in the world. But the Trinidadian company also takes advantage of its proximity to the rum industry with a range of highly approachable blends. The 1787 is named for the year Trinidad's first sugar mill opened, and uses a blend of rums aged for at least 15 years.

Nose

Vanilla fudge, banana, roasted nuts

Palate

Cacao, Caramelized sugars, Brazil nuts

Finish

Vanilla, toasted oak, allspice

The nose on this blend is so promising, delivering all the notes I would want from a rum of this age – rich fudge, caramelized sugars, tropical banana notes, rich and sweet vanilla, and warming spices bringing everything together beautifully. The palate continues to deliver on some of these notes but is notably thin and feels a little bit flat – a shame, as the nose hinted towards something bigger, richer, and bolder. The finish presents some of the woodier, aged notes with a softness of coconut and some nutty character, too, but overall this rum felt subdued and pulled back.
