The Rum Trail Australia, 2007
From independent bottler Elixir Distillers comes The Rum Trails, a series of rums plucked from notable distilleries around the world. This release comes from Australia’s oldest licensed rum distillery, where it was first distilled in a column still before a second run through a pot still. It then spent a decade in American oak before being ferried over to Elixir Distillers' facility in Scotland for a further seven years of aging in second-fill bourbon casks.
Nose
Funky esters, green banana peel, mint choc chip ice cream
Palate
Mint, banana bread, herbs, Brazil nuts
Finish
Long, herbs, oak spice
This was a really unexpected aroma and flavour experience, and not one I'd necessarily associate with this particular category, but not at all in a bad way. Full of surprises, beautifully balanced, and endlessly interesting. There is a notable – and unexpected – funk on the nose. It's followed by green banana peel, mint choc chip ice cream, and fresh vanilla pod. The palate is big on the mint initially, before moving into banana pudding, some unexpected herbaceousness, and some Brazil nuts, which adds a touch of oiliness to the texture. More tropical fruit comes through on the palate than the nose – pineapple, most notably. The finish is long, with those herbal notes really stretching through, alongside oak, and that initial funkiness really sitting on the front of the palate. Right at the end, that tropical fruit comes back around.
