An unlikely union between an Australian whisky known for red wine influence, and the peatiest of Islay malts.

Australian single malt maker Starward has released a limited-edition collaboration with Islay distillery Lagavulin.

The new release, which will only be available in limited quantities in the UK, is straightforward, at least on paper. Starward is known for its rich whisky, produced by maturing spirit in Australian red wine barrels. Lagavulin, on the other side of the world, produces smoky drams with a heavily peated and funky distillate. These are distinct styles, rarely seen together.

Starward sourced spent casks from Lagavulin, which were used to finish a standard red-wine-aged Australian whisky. The new make spirit first spends time in red wine barrels, picking up notes of red berries, soft spice, and vanilla, before being transferred into the ex-Lagavulin casks, where it takes on a savory, coastal smokiness.

Available as a limited edition, Starward x Lagavulin is the kind of cross-hemisphere collaboration that has whisky enthusiasts paying attention.

The finished whisky comes in at 48% ABV and delivers what the brand describes as ripe nectarine and charred pineapple balanced against wisps of coastal peat and a smouldering dry oak finish.

On the nose, expect yellow nectarine, pineapple, and a hint of iodine — on the palate, char-grilled pineapple, black tea, and a touch of brine before a long, drying ash finish with tropical fruit echoes.

Starward founder David Vitale summed up the spirit of the project simply: “My earliest inspiration for Starward was to create a deliciously distinctive whisky, and while we certainly hit that brief with our red wine barrel matured whisky, what whisky better epitomises distinctively delicious than Lagavulin?

“Sourcing these barrels to create this exciting expression gives us a magical moment to celebrate the very best of Australian curiosity and Scottish tradition.”
