The Macallan has unveiled a new whisky delivering a full-flavor take on its sherry-oak-seasoned 12 Year Old.
Bottled at 55% ABV, the new 12 Year Old 110 Proof sits well above anything else in its core range.
After several years where prestige brands like The Macallan focused heavily on non-age-stated releases, the tide appears to be turning. Those once-frenzied NAS bottlings that vanished in seconds are no longer the draw they were, prompting a shift back toward the fundamentals that built the brand. This latest age-stated release is designed to re-engage traditional Macallan drinkers.
The 12 Year Old 110 Proof is the first widely released age-stated Macallan in years to offer a high-strength pour of its sherry-seasoned spirit. The closest comparison is Classic Cut, a non-age-stated whisky bottled at 50% ABV. Given that the 12 Year Old 110 Proof lands at a similar price point, Classic Cut suddenly looks outflanked.
Most of The Macallan’s core whiskies are bottled between 40% and 43% ABV, even the $6,000 30 Year Old. Anything stronger is usually reserved for private or prestige clients, making this release a notable departure – and one that’s clearly resonated.
Whisky enthusiasts have long been clear on what they want from The Macallan: high-strength, age-stated whisky at a fair price. This delivers on every count.
“It is not only a classic example of the depth and elegance that The Macallan is famed for, but also showcases The Macallan’s bolder edge, with its higher ABV offering a richer and more intense experience,” said the brand in a statement.
“The high strength intensifies the flavor, enriches the texture, and deepens the complexity delivered by the influence of European oak casks our 12-year-old sherry oak is known for, offering a new dimension to a classic favourite.”
The Macallan 12 Year Old 110 Proof is available exclusively at The Whisky Shop for £125 ($165), accessible only through its awards program.
