Talisker has once again bottled its oldest Scotch whisky ever.
The Isle of Skye distillery has made a habit of breaking its own record, increasing its oldest official expression from 41 years old in 2019 to today, when Talisker Magma claims the record at 47 years old.
It’s also become accustomed to curious cask finishes with recent expressions aged in casks cracked by freezing temperatures and seasoned by cross-Atlantic journeys. Talisker Magma, as you might assume, is no different. This old whisky has been finished in new American oak casks charred by intensely heated volcanic rocks, sourced from the Isle of Skye’s ancient magma chambers.
This unusual method was first tested in the Talisker Molten Seas release, garnering high praise from our contributor Joel Harrison. The process replaces the usual open-flame approach by heating volcanic rock to high temperatures before placing it in the middle of a new cask. There is no direct contact between rocks and oak, sparing the staves from the effects of combustion.
This is supposed to intensify the wood’s fruity characters, but the whisky spent only its final six months in these casks, with much of the influence coming from 46-and-a-half years in standard-issue refill American oak hogsheads. That’s the tradition for Talisker, which tends to show its best form when paired with a low-impact ex-bourbon cask.
We haven’t tasted the Talisker Magma, so we can’t comment on the effects, but official notes show this is very much in line with classic distillery notes: chilli pepper, wet rocks, edible seaweed, and toffee. Official notes couldn’t resist describing the spice as ‘volcanic’, which sounds very spicy indeed. It’s bottled at a drinkable 48.8% ABV.
The bottle is fun, too. The fully recycled glass bottle is topped with a hand-sculpted glass stopper inspired by volcanic obsidian. There are 622 bottles available, which sounds limited, but in these modern times, you shouldn’t have to race to your nearest specialist store to get one. The price is $5,250.
On the release, master blender Greg Bruce said: “Talisker Magma represents a new frontier in how we approach cask finishes at the distillery. Working with volcanic rock-toasted casks allowed us to unearth new depths, revealing greater layers of fruit, smoke, and spice. There’s a deeply elemental connection in this whisky, linking the distillery to Skye’s volcanic landscapes, while preserving Talisker’s signature maritime character and chilli-pepper warmth.”
