Ardbeg is upping the ante with its age statements by introducing its a new permanently available 15-year-old.
Ardbeg Trudernish slots in above its ever-so-reliable 10-year-old and offers a softer alternative through mixed aging in ex-bourbon, new charred oak, and ex-Oloroso sherry casks. It’s named after an ancient settlement on Islay and is bottled at a generous 48.8% ABV.
The higher age statement and strength moves Ardbeg’s core range along with the times, where good value and higher ages are proving effective tools against growing stocks. That’s good news for drinkers, of course, but also the whisky makers, who have the task of creating more interesting expressions.
Ardbeg’s director of whisky creation Dr. Bill Lumsden MBE is certainly enthused by it. He said: “Ardbeg Trudernish is truly one to celebrate. Our spirit’s signature smokiness is brilliantly mellowed by rich, creamy flavors, softened with age. You’ll find aromas of peat and woodsmoke engulfed in melted vanilla ice cream. A silky thread of vanilla runs throughout. I guarantee this whisky’s take on Ardbeg’s peaty paradox will charm smoky malt lovers everywhere.”
Of course, Dr. Bill thinks it’s nice – he made it, or at least helped to. Should you seek more independent advice, then you’ll be interested to know that the expression has already won double gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2026. That means every judge on the blind tasting panel agreed it was worthy of a gold medal. High praise indeed.
Trudernish also arrives as the launch bottle for a redesign of Ardbeg’s entire core range. The black stays, as do the Celtic knotwork and the ‘A’, but each expression now gets its own earthy accent color to make the shelf easier to navigate. Woodcut-style illustrations by the artist Johnny Greenteeth tell each whisky’s story on the box, with Shortie, the distillery’s terrier, hidden in every one.
The boxes now carry cask recipes, fuller tasting notes and a flavor snapshot, which is an improvement for anyone choosing between five smoky Islay malts in a duty-free aisle. Capsules move from PVC to the more easily recycled polylam, and the boxes are made in the UK. Wee Beastie, naturally, stays naked.
Ardbeg Trudernish (48.8% ABV) is priced at £80 ($108) and is available from ardbeg.com, Ardbeg Embassies, the distillery visitor center and specialist retailers from September 15.
