Diplomatico rum has announced the launch of Chancellor, the brand's most limited and expensive release to date.
With only 900 individually numbered bottles available globally, Diplomatico moves into ultra-premium territory. The Venezuelan brand’s range previously topped out at around £250 / $300 for its Ambassador bottle and single vintages. The Chancellor goes well beyond that price point to £1,900 ($2,600), putting it on par with some heavily aged Scotch whiskies.
How does Chancellor justify such a price point? Beyond a rather lovely bottle and oak case, the release draws on the distillery’s heaviest pot-still rums, which have been put through a triple-cask maturation process involving French virgin oak, American virgin oak, and seasoned American oak barrels in sequence.
That is some heavy maturation for sure, with American and French oak both imparting big, bold flavors in a short space of time, particularly in the tropics. The result, according to the brand, is a spirit that punches in the same weight class as the world’s finest aged dark spirits.
Bottled at 47% ABV, Chancellor opens with aromas of dark caramel, heavy wood, and cured tobacco with hints of spice. On the palate, it’s been described as cognac-like, with ripe peach, bright citrus, and vanilla coming together in what the brand calls a “wonderfully long” finish.

Each bottle comes housed in a bespoke prestige decanter. Chancellor is currently available in the UK through The Whisky Exchange, with wider availability expected to follow.
