Karuizawa, 1971 Cask #6878
One of the original No.1 Drinks bottlings of Karuizawa, released for the princely sum of £90 ($110) from The Whisky Exchange. Now sold for multiple thousands at auction, this bottle, in many ways, this 36-year-old expression sets the scene for such a complex and enigmatic distillery.

Dark, earthy and immediately distinctive, the nose evokes an autumn forage through woodland — wild mushrooms and moss giving way to aromatic flashes of passionfruit, sherbet and orange zest, all underpinned by resonant dark sherry. The palate is remarkable at 64.1%, delivering layers of zesty passionfruit and dried figs alongside freshly ground coffee, oloroso sherry and those wild mushroom notes returning with purpose. The finish is rich and warming, with long-lasting liquorice and aged sherry rounded out by a final burst of tannic dryness.
