The multi-award-winning Woven Whisky is getting a permanent location in Leith, and everyone's invited.
Woven is one of the main protagonists in the revitalization of blended Scotch whisky, but just as Johnnie Walker did pre-Princes Street, it has lacked a physical location for fans to visit.
It is now launching a Princes Street of its own, albeit in a Woven style. So there will be two floors, not seven, and it’ll be based on Edinburgh’s outskirts in Leith rather than the center.
There will be a dedicated visitor experience, where super fans can taste Woven’s best whiskies in the lounge bar. That’ll be ready in 2027, but the experience starts today. Woven has launched a two-hour blending “apprenticeship” in the newly coined Blending Room. You’ll get a 100ml sample of your concoction with options to order larger-scale batches if you’re particularly pleased with your work.
But by the time construction is finished, it will be much more than just an immersive experience with a gift shop attached. This will house Woven’s full blending operation, so visitors can get up close and personal with the team as they drip-drop their way to their next Scotch.
Peter Allison, whisky maker and co-founder at Woven, says: “Leith was once the beating heart of the whisky industry, but over time, blending became something hidden behind closed doors. We want to open that process back up again – and the Blending Rooms are the first step in that vision. We’re opening the door and letting guests blend their own using the same components and techniques we use to create our range.
“This experience is for the makers – whether it’s amateur experiments in coffee, making pizza at home or a long-term relationship with sourdough – the best thing about any craft is rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in – and that’s what we want to offer in whisky.
“By putting the blending process in the hands of novices and proving they can build incredible whisky, we are hoping to break down the barriers the industry has built around its craft. By the time the full facility opens in 2027, we hope it becomes a place where anyone can come and experience the future of whisky being built in Leith in real time.”
This Woven wonderland will be housed in Brown’s of Leith, a multi-use space set in a large warehouse that once sat at the heart of Leith’s trading heritage.
