Old Forester, Triple Char

Old Forester has added Triple Char to its 117 Series, the limited-edition line launched in 2021 alongside releases including High Angels' Share and Extra Extra Old. It is the brand's first expression made entirely from spirit distilled at its Whiskey Row micro-distillery in downtown Louisville, though maturation took place at Shively. The name nods to barrels charred three times longer than usual, which accelerates the barrel's influence on the liquid.
Nose
Caramelized sugars, pecans, caramelized nuts
Palate
Apple, ginger spice, banana bread
Finish
Charred oak, anise, butterscotch
The liquid demonstrates the most prototypical aromas of its category. Without hesitation, I was greeted by caramel, corn, and molasses. But the addition of pecan pie tipped me off that this would be an especially dessert-ready dram. The first few sips confirmed that suspicion, making good on the promise of creme brûlée, while leaving me with lots of charred barrel to chew on in the finish. No surprises there, as this whiskey was aged in barrels that were singed for three times longer than at the typical Old Forester cooperage. Nevertheless, a fan of more classic bourbons will still find plenty to sink their teeth into here.
