Elijah Craig, 15 Year Old Single Barrel

Coming off the success of Elijah Craig's 18 Year Old Single Barrel, and the launches of even older bottles, Heaven Hill Distilleries introduces a 15 Year Old Single Barrel Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. Set as an annual, limited release, Heaven Hill Distillery uses its signature mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley. Where this release differs is its higher proof, bottled at 54% ABV, compared to the other single-barrel and small-batch releases under the Elijah Craig label.
Nose
Butterscotch, dried mango, vanilla cream
Palate
Sweetcorn, strawberries, cinnamon
Finish
Tannic notes, toasted walnut, black cherry
A prototypical bourbon in its nose, this liquid is generous with cinnamon, nutmeg and dried vanilla pods. It becomes a little less conventional in the sip, and I'm most grateful for that departure as it equates to fresh berries and even some tropical fruit threads. These elements hold true into a sustained finish, eventually accompanied by toasted walnut and spicy oak. An exciting ride from start to finish. As a single barrel offering, Elijah Craig's latest 15 year variant fluctuates slightly from batch to batch, but the one I sampled proves to me that this is a worthwhile permanent addition to one of Kentucky's most hallowed portfolios.
